Social Media in Business - Dealing with Fragmentation
Yesterday I presented a couple of seminars titled "Can Twitter do Business". The audiences were basically Twitter newbies with very few actual users. Most were looking for tips and tricks and advice on how to get started with Twitter and other tools. If you're interested you can see my slides over at Slideshare.
Tools like Slideshare, Flickr and YouTube are great for publishing different types of information that you create. However, it occurs to me that they're success has created a new problem - fragmentation. How does a business or individual provide a single point of contact for clients and friends?
RSS can fit the bill as long as people subscribe to each service. However, I'm not sure that many people really get RSS. Yesterday, I asked my audience how many of them had an RSS feed coming of their corporate website so that customers and, more importantly, potential customers could easily find out when something new was on the site. Not many hands went up.
It's always hard to pick a "next big thing" but I suspect that FriendFeed will be the one. As of today, it integrates 58 different social media and other Web 2.0 tools into a single stream. At the moment, I have YouTube, Flickr, FaceBook, Delicious Bookmarks, Twitter and Slideshare connected so that those that are interested can track what's new with me from one convenient location.
