The Universe has gone 3D mad.
By David HAGUE
I reckon James Cameron has a lot to answer for. No really, apart from foisting Titanic on us (where the best bit was the satisfying thud when that feller hit the prop on his way down), now he has sent the entire universe 3D mad.
Movies in production have been re-announced as 3D movies in production; TV manufacturers are scrambling to make 3D TV a reality and now Fuji has released a twin lens 3D still-cum-video camera for under a grand. It’s a natty, solid little beast too but with a few drawbacks.
Firstly, as is now the norm there is no viewfinder, so in bright sunlight especially with the sun behind you, forget trying to peer at the LCD panel as all you’ll see is yourself. Second, to view the images taken in 3D (it also shoots 2D) you’ll also need to shell out for the accompanying 3D viewer at another $700. Third, it has a paltry 42MB memory on board so you’ll need to cough up again for a decent 4GB or better SD card. It’s not that pretty either, but certainly it's sturdy.
The twin lenses it uses are 10megapixel Fujinon so the quality is not too shabby at all. The degree of 3D can be adjusted using parallax buttons and with the macro mode, you can get some truly great imagery.
Will 3D take over from 2D eventually? Did stereo blast mono off the face of the planet – except in talkback radio obviously? But then again, stereo AM was a flop and quadraphonic a complete an utter disaster.
But as my dear old Dad would have said – himself a pro photographer – “we used to have 3D in my day. We walked outside and opened our eyes”.

Time will tell.
