FeedMyTorrents pulls the plug
By Adam TURNER
It seems the crew at FeedMyTorrents have decided to abandon ship rather than follow the Pirate Bay into battle with the copyright police.
FeedMyTorrents.com was a handy website helping you automatically download your favourite shows via BitTorrent, maintaining RSS feeds for more than 100 popular television shows such as CSI, Lost, 24 and Boston Legal. The site's organisers crafted each list to ensure it contained a good copy of each episode, in standard or high definition, so you could subscribe to the RSS feeds using a BitTorrent client such as uTorrent.
The site has been down for more than a week, but if you go the old IP address you'll find a farewell message;
It's over. We've received several take down requests, and have decided not to test the extents of the law.
We'd like to thank everyone who contributed, and for the fun times we've had.
If you're still looking for automated feeds, try out http://tvrss.net/.
Take care,
The FMT crew.
Considering that the Pirate Bay's four founders are appealing against jail time and hefty fines, I don't think you can blame those behind FeedMyTorrents for getting out while they can. Even so, I suspect the decision was motivated by both legal and financial concerns.
In February the organisers put out a plea to help cover hosting costs after the site was hammered by 1 million hits per day. They upgraded the site later that month but indicated the money would run out in about two and a half months - which takes us to mid-May.
It's a sad reflection on the users of the site if FeedMyTorrents did fold due to hosting costs, and you could understand why the organisers would be reluctant to risk the wrath of the copyright police if their users wouldn't even chip in for the hosting costs.
