Logies ignore real talent again
By David HAGUE
I refused to watch the Logies on Sunday night. From a purely creative point of view, I knew exactly what would happen, and once again, 'good' television would be mostly passed over in favour of commercial pap.
Even much of the stuff in Tropfest is better than the majority of swill on commercial TV these days. I mean, Bondi Rescue over Choir of Hard Knocks? C'mon! And Kate Ritchie (who has left whatever soap she is in) over the likes of Denton. I'll pass on Chris Lilley as whilst I accept he is very talented, it's not my type of humour. 'Alo, allo, My Family, Family Guy and American Dad are more my type.
I'm not knocking the individual actors as such - that is I am not playing the man instead of the ball. These people, in Australia especially, have to work and in many cases it's grab whatever you can. I maintain that the majority of people who voted for Ms Ritchie have probably never watched Denton (excepting the interview with Wayne Carey perhaps). But it is indeed sad for creative writers, directors, producers, camerapersons and others when shows like BB, Get Me Out of Here and other "reality" shows are watched
in droves over say Land of Parrots, Attenborough's Life In Cold Blood, Millionaire's Mission and any number of other well produced programs that inform and entertain.
Would TV viewers watch Kate Ritchie in the same numbers if she was in something like MDA I wonder. I am guessing not. It appears to me the character was voted for, not the actor.
It's ironic that Australian Story won with a piece on effectively a star from another network mind you. Maybe as it's the first year of the new voting system, even though allegedly the numbers of voters increased by 175% over previous years, perhaps the fans of Good Television hadn't heard of this as so it was just more of the old voters instead of an influx of new ones that caused it and next year will be better.
Or maybe Logie viewers will have seen the ABC and SBS non-winners and said to themselves, "perhaps we should check that out". Here's hoping!

Until it is one vote-one value, it is always suspect!
