I fully understand your frustration. There are better Linux distros out there but the average user is not going to chase those down.
I have used (and supported) PCs since the DOS 3.x days and Linux since the late 90's. Some days I just want things to work without chasing down another fix. My Asus 1000h dual-boots to XP and Xubuntu. As of today, XP is more stable on my 1000h than Xubuntu 9.10. It hurts me to say that.
As to installing software on Linux, apt-get is pretty easy to use. Synaptic is easier yet. Maybe the Xandros implementation is to blame for your frustrations?
Spent the last 24h trying to get either eeebuntu or easypeasy to work with my brand new eee 1008ha.
They both install just fine but neither one has wlan or even ethernet working (dont get me started on the smaller tidbits). Simply put: not bloody good enough. I'm quite sure I can get this working somehow but most people I know would never get it working.
Breaks my heart that I might put the xph back because I dont have time to to fiddle for hours and hours to get out of the box hardware working.
