Carry on Holidays
By Anthony CARUANA
Next week, Chez Carry will be taking a short break to spend some time with Mrs Carry and the Carriettes. That means trying to work out what tech we're going to take with us.
At the moment, here's the list:
- Nikon D80 dSLR
- Canon compact digital camera
- Panasonic camcorder
- iPhone
- iPod nano (2nd generation)
- Nintendo DS Lite and games
- iPaq 1900 PDA (an oldie but a goodie for playing Sodoku and the like)
- Mobile phone
- MacBook Air and 3G data service
Over time, the amount of tech we've carried on holidays has shrunk but we're still left with a problem - how to keep everything charged. You'll notice that in the list, almost every device has its own bespoke charger and battery combination. Only the Canon compact camera can take regular AA batteries. Everything else needs a specific charger.
Thankfully, I can consolidate in a couple of spots. For example, the iPod and iPhone can share a charger and the dSLR and camcorder, while having different battery sleds, can share an AC cable. However, I'll still need a small box for all the charging accessories and if I forget one, I'll be in deep trouble.
One day, this will be a lot easier. It just has to be.
Over the next couple of weeks, while I'm away, one or two guest posters will be carrying on the Carry tradition. Play nice with them!

Life wasn't meant to be spent sitting still. You're meant to get out in the world and to do that you've got to be able to carry your tech. Anthony Caruana's been hooked on portable computers and mobile comms since before PDAs existed. Writing for some of the most respected tech titles, he focuses on getting the most from the tech you can carry about.
